Direction for 2002 +

Poverty has a face bearing the image of Christ. The Hungers of Poverty require us to make a personal and communal response.

We commit ourselves, therefore, to work toward the UN Millennium target of halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger and extreme poverty by 2015. In the spirit of contemplation and discernment, we will work for systemic change on an ongoing basis.

Annual Elizabeth Seton Federation NGO Liaison Meeting
Mount St. Joseph, Ohio
June 2002

Through brainstorming and discussion, the team examined global issues and trends. The team noted that recent international agreements seem to be repeating similar commitments, but the finances and political will to carry out these promises are lacking. The team decided to focus its federation corporate voice on one of the Millennium Summit Goals: the halving of extreme poverty and hunger by the year 2015. We will monitor and respond to our governments' statements, proposed legislation, etc. in regard to this goal. Educative, prayer, and resource materials will be prepared and distributed to all our Sisters. Action alerts will be forwarded monthly. We hope that every one will commit some regular action in the project.
