Hunger Relief for
Niger
Dear Sisters and
Associates,
In spite of recent
increases of food aid for Niger, the present situation in Africa is
increasingly dire.
- S. Marie Elena Dio
Background
UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan has said that world leaders must approve the proposal
for a 10-fold increase in the UN's Emergency Fund to enable it to
respond faster in providing relief to Niger, one of the poorest nations
in Africa facing food insecurity and malnutrition.

Dear Mr. Natsios,
In spite of recent
increases (US & Canada), hunger relief for Africa is still inadequate.
G8 aid for hunger relief in Africa must continue to increase until
hunger is eradicated. Inadequate, untargeted, or uncoordinated aid,
delaying conditionalities, unjust agricultural trade policies, and
unfulfilled debt cancellation are immoral and unacceptable in the face
of such widespread hunger. Please use the influence of your good office
to impact this situation.
Sincerely,
Please sign your
name and congregation
Talking Points:
- The number of
African countries facing serious hunger crises continues to
escalate: Niger, DR, Congo, Tanzania, Mali, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Malawi,
Lesotho, Mozambique.
- The G8 has pledged
to cut hunger by 1/2 by 2015 (Millennium Development Goal #1). At
the present rate of progress, this will not be achieved in Africa.
- The G8 countries
have still not fulfilled the pledge of .07% ODA (Official
Development Assistance).
- Conditions which
create famine must be anticipated by sustainable development, food
banking, debt cancellation, small farm support, agricultural and
irrigation development.
- Hunger is a cause
of disease, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and violence.
- Resources are
adequate. Political will is lacking.
